View Full Version : Garmin Aviation Program on PC

I just bought a Garmin 96 GPS. I have loaded the Garmin Mapsource software
to my PC, but can't find any aviation data in it. All I see are town,
roads, etc. Any ideas how to do aviation planning on my PC and download to
my handheld?

AFAIK, Mapsource is just terrestrial information (ie driving...)

I'm pretty sure the Jep aviation data should already be loaded.

Did you buy it new? Does it have a manual?

Concur with Jay. You can get a one-time aviation DB update from Garmin for
$35. Check out their website.

The JEP data is on the handheld, but not in Mapsource on the PC. I was
looking for a way to do aviation route planning on the PC. I would like to
do this because of the better displays etc of the PC compaired to the hand
held. For this I need the JEP data into Mapsource or some other PC
application that can load the route and waypoints onto the handheld.

Sorry, I don't have a GPS 96, but I do have a Garmin V+. I have Mapsource
software, but it's street maps, not an aviation databse.

Don't know how or where you can access the Jep data outside the unit itself.
No USB or proprietary connector of any kind?

I think Flitestar can do that.

Hi Danny,

AirPlan can do what you want to do, and its only $10 to register it.

Download it from http://www.razorsedgesoft.com/airplan.htm and you can
use it free for 60 days.

The Garmin 96 has aviation data built in. If yours doesn't, it either
isn't a Garmin 96, or something wiped it out. If it's a 96 and you're
very lucky, loading a new aviation database update will restore it.

Danny,

Just one note. AirPlan only supports the RS-232 interface to the
Garmin 96, so you will need to get an RS-232 interface cable from
Garmin to transfer routes to the Garmin 96.

Hi

I got a 96C recently, and I am using a Mac so can't even use the
Mapsource program. Using a Mac program to transfer tracks, routes
etc, and you can scan in maps and use them in the program. Uses
serial only, so I had to purchase a Garmin serial cable and a USB to
serial converter and it works well.. I am sure there will be PC
programs that allow you to use your own map and overlay the tracks and
routes on top of it.

There are some "free" GPS flight planning programs around. Or, if you're
willing to invest $$$, there's always Jepp's FliteStar (I hate that
spelling! Why can't a multi-billion dollar company use correct spelling?)

If you can upload/download waypoints and routes, you can define the
waypoints (and airports) on the PC (gotta love lat/long) and upload to
the 96.

WayPoint+ is no longer supported (Windows) but is still available
for download. And Destination Direct has been orphaned, then buried
by SAIC.

You may want to check out

www.pilotage.com/software/index.html

for other software.

Me? I use my very old Destination Direct that still works. Afterall,
mountains, cities and most airports don't move.

Mapsource has no aviation data. However, you can use flight planning software
that does have the aviation data and download your route into the GPS. I have
noticed a strong tendency for your waypoints to show up as duplicates of the
built-in waypoints when you do this, however.

That depends on the software you are using. If the route is sent
properly, the route points will use the airports and VORs in the GPS
unit's aviation database rather than creating user waypoints...

There is a program out there called AviaDBM which gives you full
access to the installed aviation database, and can make geniune
routes, but it doesn't have a map display page.

My solution was to just learn to use the handheld GPS. I sat in my armchair
and planned my flight from central NY to Houston TX -- and did it probably
as quick as a PC based system actually. I was very impressed with the
capability of the handheld and its little display.
